Cada vez son más los estados en que el cáncer es la causa número uno de muerte, según lo indica el informe anual de la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer publicado este jueves.
A pesar de que las cifras nacionales indican que la enfermedad cardiovascular sigue matando a más gente en el país, el número ha disminuido de manera representativa en los últimos 25 años: 46%.
Como consecuencia, el cáncer se convirtió en la primera causa de fallecimientos en 22 estados durante 2014, a pesar de que los índices de muerte por esta enfermedad se han reducido un 23% desde su pico más alto en 1991.
El descenso se atribuye a la disminución de las tasas de tabaquismo y a los avances en la detección del cáncer, su tratamiento y prevención.
Aún así, el cáncer también es la principal causa de muerte en ciertos grupos: latinos, asiáticos y adultos entre 40 y 79 años.
La Sociedad Americana del Cáncer predice que habrá casi 1.7 millones de nuevos casos de cáncer este año, y cerca de 600,000 muertes.
