La Organización Europea para la Investigación y Tratamiento del Cáncer (EORTC, por sus siglas en inglés) y PharmaMar (Zeltia) han comenzado el ensayo clínico en fase II para el uso de Yondelis (trabectedina) en pacientes con meningioma -cáncer cerebral-, ha informado hoy la compañía española.
El objetivo del estudio es evaluar la eficacia del tratamiento con trabectedina y su seguridad en comparación con el tratamiento estándar.
El ensayo EORTC 1320 está coordinado por el Grupo de Tumor Cerebral del EORTC y está previsto que participen 86 pacientes con meningioma recurrente en grado II o III procedentes de 47 centros de 10 países: Austria, Bélgica, Francia, Alemania, Italia, Noruega, España,Suiza, Holanda y Reino Unido.
Según la misma fuente, los datos preclínicos señalan a trabectedina y su papel en el microambiente tumoral como un potencial tratamiento para hacer frente a meningiomas malignos.
Los resultados de este ensayo ayudarán a evaluar si este fármaco debería investigarse más a fondo como una opción terapéutica para pacientes con esta enfermedad, puesto que en la actualidad necesitan alternativas.
Entre los objetivos secundarios se incluirán la supervivencia libre de progresión hasta seis meses, una mejor respuesta global y la seguridad y calidad de vida de los pacientes.COM

Trabectedin for Recurrent Grade II/III Meningioma .
Meningiomas are a type of brain tumor that form on membranes covering the brain and spinal cord just inside the skull. They occur at an annual incidence of up to 13 per 100 000, and approximately 20% of these exhibit aggressive behavior and burden patients with tumor recurrences as well as infiltration of the surrounding bone, brain, or soft tissue.
The aim of the recently opened comparative randomized phase II EORTC 1320 trial is to analyze prospectively collected data on activity, safety and quality of life of trabectedin therapy in patients with recurrent high-grade meningioma.
Dr. Preusser adds, "In fact, we saw very promising activity of trabectedin against meningioma cell lines in laboratory investigations and favorable disease stabilization in a patient with heavily pretreated malignant meningioma, and these findings provide us with a rationale for further studying the potential efficacy of trabectedin in grade II or III meningioma."

EORTC trial 1320 is coordinated by the EORTC Brain Tumor Group and plans to accrue 86 patients with recurrent grade II or III meningioma at 47 sites located in ten countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
